How to make a new house feel like a home

If you are moving into a new house, it may be harder than expected to make it feel like your home. Sometimes, it feels more like a house that you are not comfortable with quite yet. Even once the moving boxes are unpacked and the fridge and pantry are stocked with food, there’s still a feeling of newness that comes before that true sense of comfort that you get from your own home – your comfort zone. Sometimes, this feeling persists weeks and months after moving day. Other times, it never goes away at all. There’s a big difference between living in a place that you simply rely on the necessities (like a bed!) and living in a place that you really feel at home in. This is especially true in rentals. It can be difficult to establish yourself somewhere that you know you won’t be in for more than a year or two, or somewhere that is a far cry from your own taste or style. But a sense of home is all about perception, and regardless of the surrounding factors, it is possible to cultivate true warmth and personality no matter where you’re living. If you are moving soon, or if you moved recently, here are a few tips that you can follow when it comes to how to make a house feel like a home:

Create the feeling of “newness”

When you move into a new home, you do not want to feel like it is not yours. This is why you want to create the feeling of newness – a fresh, clean start. Whatever you need to do to create a blank space, definitely go for it if it is achievable. Adding new paint and carpet that you love automatically makes your new house feel more clean and more like yours for a reasonable price! Another way to make it feel new and clean? Get it deep cleaned! I highly recommend deep cleaning the house yourself. I know this may sound a bit strange, but doing so helps you get to know your home. I have found so many things that I wouldn’t have known about if I would not have taken the time to clean my house from floor to ceiling myself.

Incorporate meaningful items in your decor

Pictures, souvenirs, and more. Whatever you have that means something to you, or brings you a sense of joy, make sure to have it throughout your home. Do you love candles? Add them everywhere! Are baths your favorite thing in the world? Make sure your bathroom is ready to go, with bath soap and all.

Rearrange furniture

Each home is different. Layouts are different, the bones are different, and you may not get the furniture placement right the first time around. Don’t worry if this happens – moving furniture is so easy, even if it is too heavy for just yourself. If you run into this issue, College Dudes Help U Move can actually help with furniture rearrangement (they offer it as a labor-only service!). Have a pool table that is way too heavy? They are Charlotte NC pool table movers! What about a couch? Use their furniture rearrangement services. Are you not quite moved into your new home yet? Have them help you move your items! They offer so many labor-only and full-service moving services, and they do everything they can to alleviate the stress of moving. They say, “When our insured crew knocks on your door ready to start your move, we assure you that each and every member of our team is background checked and drug screened before they receive one of our custom-made uniforms,” so you can rest easy knowing that you are in good, professional hands with College Dudes Help U Move!

Add in small touches

Add in small touches when you can. Things that make your home cozier, more welcoming. This looks different to each person, but some ideas are: blankets on the couches or in a blanket basket, candles (as I mentioned before) or essential oils, welcome mats, indoor rugs, a coat hanger, a key holder, etc.

Fill your home with the people who mean the most to you

Nothing says home more than the people you have built one with. Spending time in your cozy abode with your significant other can make any living environment feel like a home. Inviting over other friends and family is a great way to share your home with others and create memories there that will make it feel like a special place to you. As they say – home is where the heart is!
