Proverbs 31 Wife| A Book Review and Goal

Book Review| My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife
By: Sara Horn

I bought this book back in January of 2013 and it sat on my shelf in my “to read” pile along with several other books that I will read by the end of this year. I have a Kindle Fire but I have to admit I don’t like reading on it. I much prefer the feel of a real book and pages…call me old fashioned!

Anyway, about a week before Christmas I decided to take a break from TV for a week and it was amazing how much more productive I was, aside from reading this book I was also able to get some organizing done in my home office, clean out my closet and organize the clothes I can still wear and put away all the clothes I can’t wear right now. I was really surprised to find out how much of my time is spent sitting on the couch watching TV! No wonder I always feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to get things done.
Taking a week off and reading really allowed my mind to feel less cluttered and I was able to focus on everything around me a lot better. My prayers were a lot more detailed; I had real conversations with people instead of only paying attention on commercial breaks! I made some new meals for my family and even went to bed at a decent time and I slept so much better without watching TV before bed!

I could go on and on about how great my No TV Week was but, I’d rather go on and on about this AMAZING book that I read by Sara Horn called My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife. It was her personal 1 year experiment of trying to emulate the characteristics of the Proverbs 31 woman in today’s world as a busy working mom and wife.

The book opens with Sara in church listening to her pastor’s sermon on the Proverbs 31 Wife, after reading and re-reading the chapter she decides she will embark on a journey to become more like the Proverbs 31 Wife. Being realistic she gives herself a year to complete the task. She’s honest and open about her opinion on ‘Martha 31’ [the nickname she gives Proverbs 31 wife] she explains that it seems nearly impossible for one woman to manage so many different things. She’s very candid about her experiences trying to incorporate small changes into her daily family life/routine.

I found myself being able to relate to her as a working wife and mother myself. Some days it is hard to try to keep up with it all. One passage in the book that really stuck out to me is:
“I’m learning what it means to focus less on me and more on God, because when I focus my attention on him, he enables me to focus my love and my patience on those who matter most to me”.

It’s so easy to get caught up in ourselves and focus on “me, me, me” instead of others but taking a week off of TV and reading this book really helped me to redirect my focus. I would definitely recommend this book to others, whether you’re married or not. It’s written in such a personal and relatable point of view. I'm nowhere near being exactly like the Proverbs 31 Wife but she certainly has some characteristics and qualities I aspire to have myself.

  1. Oh I think I'm going to have to read this! So hard to remember on a daily basis but I believe keeping your focus on God changes everything.

  2. It is such a challenge and such a burden placed upon us that we always feel like we need to 'do it all'. Because we just can't, and we will continually feel like we are failing.

I think skipping out on tv is a great idea, lately i've been watching less and less, though I still feel like I never have time!

  3. I've heard so many good things about this book. I'm putting it on my list of books to read this year. I think that becoming the Proverbs 31 wife is definitely obtainable. It does require some work, discipline and persistence.

  4. I've seen this book and it sounds awesome marissa. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm just like you. Quick to buy books and then they sit. HAHAHA I have 2 more to read before I can buy another. It's important to unplug. That's why I'm not doing as many blog posts. Either I was always connected to my blog and social media or something. I'm trying to do other things :) and enjoy life. It's important to step back.
